Geochronology of Bimodal Alkaline Volcanism in the Balcones Igneous Province, Texas: Implications for Cretaceous Intraplate Magmatism in the Northern Gulf of Mexico Magmatic Zone

چکیده
Small-volume Late Cretaceous monogenetic alkaline volcanism along the southern margin of North America resulted in a broad igneous belt more than 1200 km long from the Trans Pecos region of west Texas to central Mississippi, collectively forming a northern Gulf of Mexico magmatic zone (NGMMZ). The locus of igneous activity is associated with the discontinuity separating Mesoproterozoic cratonic lithosphere and Jurassic transitional lithosphere, a zone approximating the southern margin of Laurentia, the subsurface trend of the Pennsylvanian Ouachita orogenic belt, and the trace of the Miocene Balcones fault zone in Texas. Although previous studies have attempted to determine the ages of igneous activity in the region, few well-constrained geochronologic data using modern high-resolution techniques are available. We determined the age of eruption for the Balcones igneous province (BIP), a 400-km-long subsegment of the NGMMZ, using modern Ar/Ar and U-Pb geochronology methods. Our results suggest that previously reported K/Ar and Ar/Ar ages underestimate the age of igneous activity by as much as 17%. New ages from this study, along with reevaluation of previous results, suggest that BIP igneous activity occurred in two discrete phases, each lasting only 2.6 m.yr. and separated by 2.7 m.yr.: older mafic volcanism occurred between 81.5 and 84.1 Ma and younger felsic volcanism between 76.2 and 78.8 Ma. The total interval of 8 m.yr. for BIP igneous activity is much shorter than had previously been inferred. The best geochronologic results are obtained from U-Pb dating of zircon mineral (phonolites) separates and Ar/Ar dating of phlogopite (nephelinites and basanites) and amphibole (phonolites) separates. TheOrdovician volcanic and intrusive rocks of the Cadia–Neville region, in the southern Molong Volcanic Belt section of the Macquarie Arc in central-western New South Wales, display a temporal progression from shoshonitic basaltic volcanism (e.g. Mt Pleasant Basalt Member) in the late Darriwilian to Gisbornian (ca 460–453 Ma) to small-volume dacitic medium-K calc-alkaline magmatism (e.g. Copper...
متن کاملSilicic volcanism: An undervalued component of large igneous provinces and volcanic rifted margins
Silicic volcanic rocks are associated with most, if not all, continental ×ood basalt provinces and volcanic rifted margins, where they can form substantial parts of the eruptive stratigraphy and have eruptive volumes >104 km3. Poor preservation of silicic volcanic rocks following kilometer-scale uplift and denudation of the volcanic rifted margins, however, can result in only deeper level struc...

Numerous post-ophiolite intrusions exposed into the late Cretaceous–Paleocene Sabzevar ophiolite belt, northeast Iran. The intrusions consist of calc-alkaline intermediate to felsic rocks with metaluminous to peraluminous in nature and adakitic affinities. Based on U-Th-Pb dating on separated zircons by SHRIMP Ⅱ, the emplacement age of these rocks into the ophiolite zone is constrained to ~45 M...

Fathabad area is located in northwest of the city of Zarand (Kerman province) in the Posht-e-Badam block of the central Iran structural zone. The Ordovician–Silurian gabbroic stocks have intruded into volcanic-sedimentary rocks of the Rizu series. The gabbros are mainly composed of clinopyroxene, kaersutite, plagioclase and biotite. Electron microprobe analyses demonstrate that the clinopyroxen...

The Paleocene was a time of transition for the Arctic, with magmatic activity of the High Arctic Large Igneous Province (HALIP) giving way to magmatism of the North Atlantic Large Igneous Province in connection to plate tectonic changes in the Arctic and North Atlantic. In this study we investigate the Paleocene magmatic record and sediment pathways of the Basilika Formation exposed in the Cent...
